With spring comes new life and this is exactly what eating raw foods can offer our bodies and overall health. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, we need to take care of our bodies by consuming a range of nutritious foods. One of the most beneficial types of food we can eat are raw foods. But why are raw, plant-based foods so good for us? This is because they contain way more enzymes than any other food type out there. Enzymes are useful when it comes to absorbing all of the foods nutrients. When we eat cooked foods, we simply do not consume as many vital nutrients. Animal products are known for being harder to digest and therefore we do not absorb all of the vitamins and minerals that we should be.
Eating raw foods also has other additional benefits for our health and nutrition. A large amount of raw food is high in alkaline and this can help and improve inflammation. If you suffer from inflammation, regardless of whether it is short-term or long-term or how you came to getting the problem, foods that contain alkaline are known for contributing to the healing of inflammation. Not only that, but raw foods can also help when it comes to circulation problems. The fresh, raw foods get to work from the inside-out, leaving you feeling much healthier throughout your whole body.
Why Spring, Why Now?
As the season starts, it becomes increasingly easier to eat these essential raw foods. During the long winter of doing nothing but eating lots of hot meals while snuggling under a blanket, our bodies are in need of some fresh, raw foods in our diet. After spending months without consuming what we need to, our digestive system can end up feeling a little worse for wear. We all could do with a bit of a pick-me-up and as the warmer months start to come, it becomes easier. It is becoming increasingly popular to kick start spring with a fresh outlook and a brand new, healthier lifestyle.
There are a variety of ways that we can ensure ourselves that we are consuming enough raw, plant-based foods, on a daily basis. Significantly increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables that you consume may sound daunting at first, especially when you aren’t used to it, but it is much easier than you think. Once you have focused on eating enough fruit and veg, it is then time to try and include some fruit juices and freshly made smoothies into your healthier diet.
Here are some of our tips for getting those essential raw foods into your diet.
Healthy Smoothies
We have all heard that oats are a good food to be eating, so why not take some of those porridge oats from your cupboard and put them to even better use. Rather than making a hot bowl of porridge as you did in the winter months, make a nutritious smoothie with added health benefits. In your smoothie, you could think about including some vegetables, greens, seeds, fruit and alternative milks. In a single smoothie, you could be giving your body those essential vitamins that your body needs.
Snack on Raw Food
Implementing raw food into your diet can seem overwhelming at first, but it really is incredibly simple. Go out and buy some of your favourite raw foods and simply start off by snacking on them in the middle of the day. If this seems a difficult place to start, then why not just add them to your meals. For lunch, try to include some fresh fruit, carrot sticks and celery sticks. This effortless way will give you huge benefits and it doesn’t require much thought at all.
Switch it Up with New Recipes
We have all thought it – raw food? How boring! But it doesn’t have to be this way, at all. Exploring a range of raw foods can be a fun thing to do as you find out what you like and what combinations you can use. Why not set yourself a challenge of trying, at least, one new fruit or vegetable every week? Within no time at all you will be consuming a whole range of raw foods. Then once you have discovered brand new flavours, why not search for recipes that you can use them in?
Eat Lighter
Swap in those heavy meals in for foods that are much lighter and easier on your digestive system. All of those heavy meals that we have been eating over the winter months slows us down but now that spring has arrived we are looking for a way of speeding us all back up again. Try to think about what you are eating and consume foods that contain zero additives and preservatives in the ingredients.
Include One Day of Eating Raw
A great way of making sure that you are getting all of those essential raw foods into your diet is to slot in one day of eating only raw foods. The nutritional value that this has on offer is so valuable to your whole body health. At first this may sound scary, but after doing it the first time you will realise it really is so easy. During this day, consume as many different fruit and vegetables as you can and even include some smoothies in there to mix it up. Have fun with it and get looking at some raw food recipes in preparation for the day!
