While a sedentary lifestyle may not be as hectic as an active lifestyle, everyone will admit that the grass is indeed not greener on the less active side.
What’s So Bad about a Sedentary Lifestyle?
Here is a list of all the health risks that a person becomes susceptible to if they keep living a lifestyle that does not give them time for physical activity, according to an article by John Hopkins Medicine:
-
- Increased risk of cancers
- Increased risk of depression and anxiety
- More likely to be in psychological distress
- More likely to develop dementia
- More likely to have a low sex drive
- Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases
- Expected to develop coronary heart disease
- Decreased musculoskeletal mass
- Can suffer from high blood pressure
- Can suffer from elevated levels of cholesterol
- Increased chances of insomnia
Clearly, with such a lifestyle, you’re right to be worried. But worrying alone will not change anything. Here are 5 things you should do to keep yourself healthy, despite your desk job.
1. Cut Down on Your Snacking Habits
While snacking on those fruit roll-ups and chips might make you feel happy and fulfilled now, the results can be devastating in the long run. Remember, there’s a reason why junk food and easy snacks have been banned from schools.
Instead, bring some fruit along with you every day. Or stick to dry fruits and carrot sticks with some delicious hummus. If you’ve got the time at home, try some of our snack and treat recipes and store them in an airtight can at the office. Be warned though, others will join in!
2. Set a Schedule for Stretching
“I have a minute to walk. Let me take it” — to yourself. If you’re a workaholic as well, your mind will try everything in its power to keep you working. Set timers in your smartphone for every hour and get up to walk for one whole minute so your legs get some exercise. Your knees will thank you.
3. Wait a Minute, or Five
Despite all your efforts, you just can’t work all the time. Pressuring yourself to keep working will only cause more mental fatigue and will eventually lead you to getting a brownout (a one-degree less intense version of a burnout). Along with that minute where you stretch, slot in an additional few minutes to give your brain some rest. Hum a tune if you must, but use this time properly.
4. Keep that Caffeine intake Low
One cup a day, then a cuppa green tea, then water! Yes, this might seem pretty grim, especially if you rely on caffeine to get through the day. So here’s what you do; try weaning yourself off the caffeine, one day at a time.
Have 4 large mugs of coffee a day? Get down to 3, and eventually, 2. Replace a mug with a smaller cup, drink more water, have some green tea.
