This is one my most favorite topics because oral health is my specialty but also because gum disease is so preventable. Having the right balance of healthy bacteria in your mouth is key to your overall health and wellness. Evidence based research shows that gum disease is linked to a host of chronic illness. So why not focus on those pearly whites a bit more.

Periodontal inflammation of the gums is very common; it is initiated by the formation of excessive plaque on the teeth, certain type of bacteria can cause this inflammation and the food we eat has a major part in it. Inflammation of the gums has been studied for over 100 years, and it is now known that diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help in reducing and lowering this chronic inflammation of the gums that often leads to bleeding.

Inflammation of the gums is also known as gingivitis, a gingivitis infection can develop into periodontitis, periodontitis often results in tooth removal if it goes unchecked. Researchers have always known that alongside proper hygiene healthy food and eating habits can create a healthy oral environment that lead to lesser population of infection causing bacteria.

A healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants vitamin C and fat-soluble vitamin D, and fiber can contribute to a healthy oral cavity. A diet low in refined carbohydrates can significantly reduce inflammation of the gums or gingivitis, complex carbohydrates like in whole grains, vegetables and fruits, beans and legumes, and seeds stabilize the blood glucose levels and thus are beneficial for the teeth, as well.

Overall, a healthy and well-balanced diet works for your gums and teeth and whole body health. Periodontal inflammation can be reduced to a great extent by practicing proper oral hygiene, eating a healthy and balanced diet and not smoking. Pick up foods with low glycemic index that help in stabilizing the blood glucose and there is no insulin spike in the blood.

Refined carbs have a high glycemic index and raise the blood glucose level instantly; sweets, candies, sodas all have a high glycemic index.
In order to reduce inflammation of the gums and have a healthy oral cavity, it is important to reduce the intake of inflammatory omega-6 containing vegetable oils and Trans fat.
